High school Talk

6 Things I Wish I knew when i was your Age

In this powerful talk, students will learn:

Gratitude

  • Like a skill in a sport, gratitude is a skill that needs to be practiced
  • Gratitude can help help us through challenging times
  • Start by “lowering the bar” when reflecting on what you are grateful for (the things we often take for granted).

Empathy

  • Understanding that everyone in your life wants to be happy and feel like they belong
  • Having the ability to see things from another person’s point of view and treats others how they want to be treated
  • Asks themselves – What can I do to help (a friend, family member, teacher, a stranger)?
  • Understanding that others may see things differently and that’s okay
  • Is compassionate towards others in challenging times

Reframing

  • Is one of the most important and powerful skills a person can have
  • Using your self-talk to see a situation from a more positive point of view
  • Coming from a place of gratitude, empathy and positive reflection is powerful when reframing

Self-Awareness

  • Understanding how you are feeling
  • Is aware of their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Knowing how to react to different situations and how to respond to others
  • Knowing how others see you

Ownership

  • Taking responsibility for what you do in your life
  • You’re self-aware of what you need to improve, you take ownership of that and take action to make it happen
  • Taking action yourself to achieve goals and overcome challenges

The Slight Edge Method

  • Understanding that working towards goals can take time
  • Works towards goals daily
  • Ask yourself – “what do I need to do today to get closer to my goal?”
  • Knowing you need to take action
